launch pad: the brothers size
7 July 2006

by Tarell Alvin McCraney

directed by Bijan Sheibani

Playing fast and loose with Yoruba tradition and cosmology the Brothers Size charts the story of two brothers, Ogun and Oshoosi Size, who find themselves rediscovering the bond of brotherhood that could save them from the perils of poverty, the loss of a mother, and ultimately, prison.

Yoruba experience is a combination of cultural triumph and human tragedy: a culture known for its artistic triumphs, extraordinary oral literature, complex pantheon of gods, and urban lifestyle yet, it is also a civilization that sent millions of its men, women and children to the Americas as slaves. Their numbers and cultural impact were so great that their religion and culture have remained important in the cities of the eastern United States.
