open access workshop:
Handle With Care II
Led by Jennifer Farmer
17 July 2008
6-9pm

Open to writers at every level, these workshops are led by theatre professionals and members of Soho Theatre’s artistic team. They offer a combination of theoretical and practical approaches designed to explore different aspects of the craft of playwriting and embrace a range of theatrical languages.

Handle With Care II follows-on from the workshop in February and will focus specifically on the challenges of creating a dramatic piece from the stories and experiences of vulnerable groups.  The session will offer practical ways in which to address some of the questions that writers face when creating such work; whose story is being told and why; is it being truthful; how to artistically engage with personal material; how to write for vulnerable groups AND theatre audiences.

Playwright Jennifer Farmer has written for and with women in prison, children at risk and refugee groups.  Her acclaimed play, Compact Failure, was written as part of a residency at HMP Send for Clean Break.  Her most recent play, Bulletproof Soul, premiered at Birmingham Rep in March 2007 and Jennifer has written plays for the Bush Theatre, Paines Plough, the National Youth Theatre, Theatre Royal Stratford East and BBC Radio 3 and 4.  Her current commissions include plays for the Tricycle Theatre, Birmingham Rep and BBC Radio 3.

Recent feedback from a workshop attendee:

'Thank you for the great workshop once again! It was fantastic and incredibly useful/relevant to the work I am carrying out at Uni. With every workshop I have been to at Soho Theatre, I have gone onto write about in my essays for specific projects.'

'I  wish other theatres would open themselves up as much as Soho, I do not know of any other theatre that offers such fantastic personal contact from their own staff and practitioners from the external professional world. As a student this theatre is the most encouraging of new work, and the most accessible to the sometimes 'secret world of theatre.' that I have come across.'
